Humanizing Data

“Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity.”

- Charles Mingus

Exploratory data analysis is a powerful paradigm that is a tightrope walk in achieving the right balance between information, presentation, and interaction.

While data accuracy and integrity are essential, generating insights at scale requires more than that. It requires a deep understanding of the technologies that collect and process as well as the data and its relationships to the meaning we give it.

Through global election reporting and complex city monitoring, I found a love for experiences that wrestle with the challenges of interrogating large volumes of realtime multidimensional data.

It’s complicated stuff with the simple purpose of humanizing data.

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the [people] to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”

―Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Politics & Elections 2014

The Politics & Elections Team continues the mission of building products and programs to help people across the globe engage with democratic processes, to protect elections and campaigns, and to help campaigns manage their digital presence.

Better Cities

Better Cities aspired to revolutionize city life through a central hub that enabled real-time, data-driven testing of urban environments. The project provided residents with intelligent transportation options, feeding a continuous stream of data back to city administrators. The insights gained influenced a wide range of urban development decisions, from traffic management to food access, setting new benchmarks in participatory governance and innovative city planning.
